Are Depression Tests Really Necessary?

Sometimes, when you have a problem you really don’t know what’s wrong with you. Say, for instance, you have a bump on your arm that is raised and inflamed. What would you do? You would probably make an appointment with a doctor to see what it is. The doctor would then perform tests and would then diagnose you and subsequently treat you for the arm sore. What if you can’t see the problem, however? What if suddenly your thoughts are much darker than normal? What if you don’t feel like going outside? What if you don’t feel like being around people or being in social situations at all, even with friends and family? This sounds like depression but isn’t that obvious? Would you really need a depression screening test to tell you you’re feeling down and in the dumps? The answer is yes, you should always get tested for whatever’s bothering you; whether you can see it or not. As far as where to go to get the depression test, that’s when things get tricky.

Online Tests

We live in the information age and that means no matter where we are, we typically have loads of information right at our fingertips. In the example above with the raised bump on our arm, most people would just go to the computer and do an internet search for the symptoms. That’s a great way to find out what might be bothering us. And it’s the same with depression. Type in the words ‘moody’, ‘down’, ‘blue’, or ‘isolation’, and you’re likely to come across pages dedicated to depression tests. These tests are supposed to tell you whether you’re depressed or just a little down as any normal person gets every now and again. Should you listen to these tests, however? Probably not, as nobody really knows who made them. Any teenager with web design software and a gift for words can create a depression test or any other kind of test that will have people freaking out because they think they’re suffering from some disorder when they’re really more normal than they realize. Therefore if after taking the depression test online you still think you have a problem, seek professional help immediately.

Seeking Help

The only depression test you should take to heart is one administered by a certified professional. Whether it’s from a psychiatrist, psychologist, therapist or just a general practitioner, the test you’re taking is likely to be backed by the medical and psychiatric fields. So when the depression test administered by one of these professionals comes back positive, you will know you’re in good hands because the person giving the test can also treat you for depression so you can get your life back to normal. How does that compare to an online depression test? It doesn’t but at least the online test will get you thinking about getting help, which is imperative for anyone suffering from depression at any level or stage.
