Bipolar Manic Depression: What To Do If Your Child Is
Depressed
Bipolar manic depression not only
affects adults, it can also affect young children. Studies show
that there are a number of children around the country who are
suffering from this disorder and many of them are not getting
the right kind of treatment simply because their parents are in
denial of their condition. Well meaning parents often downplay
the symptoms of bipolar depression disorder in their children
hoping that by denying the existence of the disease, the
disease will disappear magically. Unfortunately, this is not
the case. Children who are suffering from bipolar manic
depression need medical attention and if they do not get the
right kind of treatment, their condition may deteriorate even
further. If your child is showing symptoms of bipolar manic
depression, you should see to it that he or she gets help
immediately.
Helping Your Child Cope With The
Disorder
Children who are suffering from bipolar disorder need a lot
of support and understanding from their family. We have to
understand that these children are just victims of the disease
and they need our help. We should also bear in mind that
bipolar manic depression is a chronic disorder that may recur
from time to time. It is not unusual for sufferers to have
recurring episodes of the disorder. Some episodes may be mild
and some may be severe. Once your child is diagnosed with
bipolar manic depression, you need to monitor the condition of
your child closely. Make sure that you child gets enough
exercise and that he or she is eating well. Studies show that
children who are sedentary are more prone to bipolar manic
depression compared to children who are active. Moreover,
children who are eating well are more likely to cope with
depression that those children whose diet are far from being
desirable.
Aside from letting your child exercise and eat well, you
should see to it that you child is comfortable in his or her
environment. Avoid changing the routine of your child
especially if he or she is very much attuned to that routine
already. According to experts, disruption in the child’s
routine may cause a lot of stress. Stress can trigger an
episode of bipolar manic depression so you should see to it
that you child is not exposed to undue stress. It would also be
a good idea to discuss your child’s condition with his or her
teachers in school so that the teachers will know what to do if
you child suffers from a bipolar episode in school.
